Easy versus Simple

Submitted by Damselfly

I went to the gym this morning, as per my usual routine on Thursday.  I arrived about 7:45 AM, turned on the lights, started the music playing, and started my warm up.  As always, the start of my workout is a way to get my muscles warmed up and settle the spinning of my thoughts.  Time to focus on the workout.

My workout partner arrived about 15 minutes later, starting her routine as well.  We work out together but not always “together”.  It is good to have someone to help give a nudge when you feel like slowing down!  Our workout was a mixture of weight training, high-intensity interval training, balance, and core work.  We both managed to work up a good sweat, took time after our one-hour session to stretch and foam roll our thankful muscles, and congratulate each other on a job well done.

At 9:00 AM the next group arrived and I took my position as trainer.  As the people moved through their workouts, someone exclaimed “Wow! This is hard!” I used the opportunity to congratulate her on being able to do the “hard” work, and added my favorite motto in fitness:

If it was easy, everyone would do it!

It is not easy to commit to regular exercise.  It is not easy to learn new ways to move your body.  It is not easy to deal with muscle fatigue and soreness after a hard workout… sometimes for a couple of DAYS after the workout!

But it is simple.

It is as simple as being at the place you commit to be at the time you commit to be there.  It is not easy, but it is simple!

Many of our choices in life are that same way.  We see our lives as complicated.  We see our lives as busy.  Yet we make choices each day to add more and more. We could simply choose to do fewer things that would afford more time.  Less complicated.  Less busy.

Simple.

I will continue my commitment to train hard.  My life may not always be easy.  I may not always be able to choose.

But if it was easy, everyone would do it!
